Temples in Shimla

There are many temples in and around Shimla and some of them like Jakhoo temple are really old and believed to be of prehistoric period.I will give here an account of some of the temples located in aand around Shimla.

Jakhoo Temple-Situated at the top of the highest hill around the Shimla,the Jakhoo hill,Jakhoo temple is a worth seeing place.The view of mountains and town from here is amazing.Jakhoo temple is situated at a height of about 2.5 kms.Reaching here is really a tough job because you have to trek for about 2 kms and this trek is really tiring.But you can hire ponies and reach there without taking any pain of trekking.Walking sticks are also available at the shops near Jakhoo hill.Jakhoo temple is believed to be of pre-historic period.A legend is attached to this temple like any other temple in India.It is believed that Lord Hanuman took rest here while his way back to Lanka after taking miraculous herb,Sanjivani to treat Laxman, the younger brother of Lord Rama.That is why this temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.Like many temples of Hanuman this temple is also a home of hundreds of monkeys.You should be careful as they may attack you once provoked.





Temple of Tara Devi-This place is easily reachable from Shimla bus stand.You can reach here by foot,taxi or bus.Located at a height of about 1900 mts. this place is paradise for photographers and nature lovers.The view of mountain ranges and woods from this place is amazing.
Tara Devi temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara Devi,one of the incarnations of Goddess Parvati.It is believed that the Goddess controls all well being of the universe.If you want to escape from the din and bustle of the daily life then you should visit this temple. The landscape and the ambience will definitely give you mental peace.

Sankat Mochan-This temple is easily approachable and lies 5 kms from Shimla.It is located in way to Shimla from Kalka.Compared to other temples this is very new, consecrated in the year 1966.It is surrounded by lush green forests , emerald meadows, the majestic lofty mountains in the background and offers a very soothing and meditative environment.The complex comprises of Lord Rama and Hanuman temple, Lord Shiva Temple , Navgrah Temple ,Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj Temple and a beautiful Ganesha Temple portraying the architecture of the south.The temple complex has a langer hall where 'prashad'is offered to visitors every sunday.The complex also has a marriage hall.
